Project Summary

A Month To Date (MTD) report is a financial summary that outlines the performance of a company from the start of the current month up to the present date. It provides an overview of the company’s financial status and aids in tracking progress and making well-informed decisions.

In the case of an engineering and manufacturing company, the complexity of MTD reporting increases due to the involvement of multiple factors such as sales, revenue, Cost of Goods Sold (COGS), Direct Labor, Indirect Labor, scrap, inventory, and forecasts. MTD reporting is conducted at both the business unit level and the sub-unit level within each business unit.

Currently, the process of preparing MTD reports involves copying all input sheets into an Excel file and applying various rules and macros to obtain the final report. This manual process consumes an entire day for the finance team to complete the report and submit it to management during the weekly MTD meeting.

Our proposed web-based tool aims to streamline the MTD reporting process for engineering and manufacturing companies by eliminating manual intervention. This tool offers the following features:

  • Centralized Storage: Input files (Excel sheets) are stored in a central folder, ensuring that the data is up to date and readily available.
  • Data Extraction: The tool extracts relevant data from the input files, including sales, revenue, COGS, labor, scrap, inventory, and forecasts.
  • Complex Calculations: Predefined rules and macros are applied to process the data and derive the required metrics.
  • Report Generation: The tool generates user-friendly MTD reports that can be accessed through a web interface and downloaded in PDF and Excel formats.
  • Business Unit and Sub-Unit Level Reporting: MTD reports are generated at both the business unit and sub-unit levels, allowing for comprehensive performance tracking.
  • Automation and Time Efficiency: Automation reduces time and effort, enabling finance resources to focus on value-added activities and eliminating manual errors.
  • Real-Time Updates: The tool reflects changes in the input files instantly, ensuring that the reports remain accurate and timely.
